Premier League clubs have smashed their single-window transfer spending record for the second consecutive season, with the total outlay in the 2026 summer window reaching almost £3.5 billion.
The unprecedented spending surge eclipsed last season’s record of £3.14 billion, underlining the Premier League’s growing financial dominance over the global transfer market.
Manchester City, Chelsea, Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal were among the clubs driving the spending boom, while more than half of the Premier League’s 20 clubs broke their transfer records during the window.

Several deals also crossed the £100 million mark, with Manchester City’s deadline-day signing of Enzo Fernandez from Chelsea among the biggest transfers of the summer.
Man City lead record-breaking spending
City completed the signing of the 25-year-old Argentina midfielder for £125 million, matching the British transfer record paid by Liverpool for Alexander Isak 12 months earlier.
Fernandez joined a significantly reshaped City midfield alongside England international Elliot Anderson, who arrived from Nottingham Forest for £116 million.
City also signed Senegal forward Iliman Ndiaye from Everton in a £65 million deal, taking the club’s summer spending beyond £450 million.
The heavy investment comes as City begin a new era following the departure of Pep Guardiola after a decade of unprecedented success at the Etihad Stadium.
The squad has also undergone significant changes, with Rodri joining Barcelona and long-serving players Bernardo Silva and John Stones leaving the club.
“At Manchester City, we are always looking to bring in world-class players, and Enzo fits the bill,” City’s director of football Hugo Viana said.
“He is a complete midfielder — technically gifted, hard-working, tenacious and a goalscorer.”
Fernandez said the opportunity to join City was one he could not ignore.
“Every player wants to be part of a club like this,” he said.
Chelsea, Liverpool and Spurs spend big
Chelsea were also active during the window as new manager Xabi Alonso continued his rebuilding project.
The Blues made England international Morgan Rogers their marquee signing, paying £117 million to Aston Villa, while Maxence Lacroix, Emiliano Martinez, Jordan Henderson and Danny Welbeck also arrived.
A late move for Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara, however, collapsed on deadline day.
Liverpool continued their own heavy investment by completing the signing of France winger Bradley Barcola from Paris Saint-Germain for a fee that could rise to around £124 million.
Tottenham also spent more than £300 million after finishing just one place above the relegation zone last season.
The north London club brought in Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali, Mateus Fernandes and Omar Marmoush as part of a major squad overhaul.
Spurs also secured Chelsea winger Mykhailo Mudryk on loan on transfer deadline day after missing out on Ndiaye and Cody Gakpo.
Premier League financial power grows
Premier League champions Arsenal had a quieter deadline day after their pursuit of Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez failed to materialise.
Barcelona eventually turned to Arsenal for attacking reinforcements, signing Brazilian forward Gabriel Jesus.
Aston Villa, meanwhile, endured a major squad overhaul after losing several key players, including Youri Tielemans, Morgan Rogers, Ezri Konsa, Emiliano Martinez and Ollie Watkins.
Villa responded by bringing in Nicolas Jackson, Johan Manzambi and Ibrahim Mbaye.
The scale of spending across the Premier League once again highlights the financial strength of English football, with clubs continuing to break transfer records and outspend many of their European rivals.
With total expenditure approaching £3.5 billion, the 2026 summer window has set a new benchmark for Premier League spending and reinforced the competition’s position as the most financially powerful transfer market in world football.
