Opjakes’ four-track Mospheric Vol 1 feels less like a conventional instrumental EP and more like a short film score. There are no lyrics telling you what to feel. Instead, piano, bass, drums and guitar carry most of that responsibility, giving each track its own scene and emotional direction.
“Wind” makes that clear from the beginning. The central melody winds through almost the entire track, returning again and again while piano and bass drums build around it. There is something cinematic about the repetition. It feels like music written for movement on screen, the kind of score that sits underneath a scene and quietly tells you where the emotion is heading.
“Piano Song” is exactly what its title promises, although it opens with a warm vocal before giving the instrument centre stage. Different piano layers move around one another, from deeper keys underneath to lighter melodies sitting above them. The result feels hopeful and eager, almost as though the music itself is anticipating something.
“Calm” is perhaps the project’s most peaceful track. It is OPjake sitting down with a guitar and trying to answer a simple question: what does calm hope sound like? Bass guitar and piano sit together comfortably, and once again the track has the quality of a movie score rather than just an instrumentals track.
Then “Lost” changes the emotional temperature. It sounds like the moment after a realisation, when somebody knows they are lost but has not quite worked out the way back yet. The lo-fi production gives it a hazy quality, while the melody gradually rises and crescendos. There is sadness in the guitar, but not defeat. Somewhere underneath it is still a glimmer of hope.
That is what makes Mospheric Vol 1 work.
The instruments carry enough emotional weight that vocals would almost get in the way.
Opjakes is not simply making background music here. He is scoring feelings. And if you ever needed something to play while you get lost in your own thoughts without being distracted by words, this would do the job.
