On Tuesday, April 14, Inter Miami surprised the soccer world by announcing on its official social media accounts the resignation of coach Javier Mascherano, who left voluntarily along with the coaching staff that arrived with him in January 2025.
Meanwhile, “Masche’s” position will be temporarily filled by Guillermo Hoyos, while the director of soccer operations, Alberto Marrero, will take over the role left vacant by Hoyos as sporting director.
Who is Ángel Guillermo Hoyos?
Since his arrival at Inter Miami, Hoyos has played a key role within the organization. He has been responsible for overseeing and driving the club’s professional development, and his comprehensive knowledge of the sport positions him as a key figure within the project.
For this reason, Guillermo will take over as head coach of the first team for the upcoming matches, drawing on his extensive career in soccer.
The former soccer player has more than 20 years of experience on the field, and off the field, he has served as a coach and sporting director, making his mark in several countries, including Argentina, Mexico, Chile, Greece, and Cyprus. Additionally, he took on the challenge of leading the Bolivian national team and managed renowned clubs such as Universidad de Chile and Atlas in Mexico.
One of the highlights of his career is his strong commitment to developing young talent, which led him to Barcelona, where he worked in player development and was there during Lionel Messi’s early days, forging a relationship that continues to this day.
The 38-year-old global legend recognized Hoyos as his “soccer father“: “He helped me a lot from the moment I arrived at Barça. He was always there for me… He taught me things and helped me get to where I am today,” Leo had said.
With this new leadership role, Inter Miami is banking on experience, a close connection with its star players, and a developmental vision that could shape the club’s direction in the short term.
Meanwhile, Mascherano stepped down of his own accord after a total of 67 games in charge, with 38 wins, 15 draws, and 14 losses.
