AI is Vietnam’s new capital magnet

AI is Vietnam’s new capital magnet

Vietnam’s AI startups just had their best year on record. Capital deployed into AI ventures grew roughly 13x between 2023 and 2025, closing the year at a new high, while the number of deals nearly doubled over the same stretch. In a private capital market that is still finding its footing on the world stage, that is not a small signal — it is the clearest evidence yet of where investor conviction in Vietnam is heading.

I’ve spent the last ten years working in IT across the region, and the last several running TechHub Asia alongside founders building in this space every day. What strikes me about this AI wave isn’t just the size of the numbers — it’s why they’re happening now, and whether Vietnam is actually positioned to turn a funding spike into a durable industry.

    Why now

Three forces are converging at the same time.

    • The talent base has quietly matured. A decade of engineers cutting their teeth at outsourcing houses, e-commerce platforms, and fintechs has produced a pool of builders who understand both the technical and commercial sides of shipping AI products — not just researchers, but people who can turn a model into a business.
    • Global capital is actively looking for the “next” market after years of concentrating in a handful of AI hubs. Investors who might have overlooked Vietnam five years ago are now running the numbers on cost structure, talent depth, and speed to market — and increasingly liking what they see.
    • Domestic demand. Vietnamese enterprises in banking, retail, and manufacturing are under real competitive pressure to adopt AI, which creates a home market for local AI startups to prove their products before they ever pitch an international investor. That combination — builders, believers, and buyers — is what actually sustains an investment cycle instead of just kicking one off.

    What the data doesn’t say

Here’s where I’d push back on a purely celebratory reading of the numbers. A 13x jump from a low base is an easy multiple to produce; it says more about how early Vietnam was starting from than how mature the ecosystem now is. The deal count, while growing, is still small in absolute terms compared to regional peers. And funding is concentrated in a handful of standout names — which is normal at this stage, but means the depth of the pipeline behind them matters more than the headline growth rate.

The honest question for anyone building in this space isn’t “is AI investment growing in Vietnam” — clearly it is — but “what happens in year three, when the novelty premium wears off, and investors start asking for the same unit economics and defensibility they’d demand anywhere else.”

    Where the gap actually is

From where I sit, the constraint isn’t capital anymore — it’s the connective tissue around it. Founders with strong technical teams often lack direct lines to the enterprise buyers, regional investors, and cross-border partners who can turn a promising model into a scaling business. That’s the real gap: connecting AI founders with the enterprise customers, mentors, and investors they need to move from a working model to a working business.

The startups I’d bet on aren’t necessarily the ones with the flashiest model — they’re the ones that have figured out distribution into a real market, whether that’s Vietnamese enterprises hungry for AI adoption or international customers who don’t care where the team is based, only that the product works.

    What would make this durable

If Vietnam wants this AI moment to compound rather than plateau, three things need to happen alongside the capital:

    • Enterprise adoption needs to move faster than it currently is, so domestic AI startups have a real home market to prove themselves in before going global.
    • Talent pipelines need deliberate investment— not just more computer science graduates, but people trained specifically to build and deploy applied AI, which is a different skill set from traditional software engineering.
    • Cross-border connections need to be built intentionally. Capital is mobile and will keep finding Vietnam if the returns are there — but distribution, partnerships, and market access for Vietnamese founders abroad still largely have to be built by hand.

None of this is unique to Vietnam. Every emerging tech hub goes through the same test: can you convert a funding cycle into an industry, or does the capital eventually move on to the next undervalued market? Vietnam has the ingredients — the talent, the domestic demand, and now the investor attention — to make the former case. Whether it does will be decided less by how much capital shows up this year, and more by how well the ecosystem around that capital gets built in the next two or three.
