Why Harry Kane won the 2026 Ballon d’Or
Harry Kane’s 2026 Ballon d’Or win followed a season in which he scored 73 goals for club and country. Kane scored 61 times for Bayern Munich and 12 for England, won the Bundesliga scoring title for a third consecutive season, recorded 14 Champions League goals and helped Bayern complete a domestic treble.
Kane became the first English men’s Ballon d’Or winner since Michael Owen in 2001 and the fifth English winner overall after Stanley Matthews, Bobby Charlton, Kevin Keegan and Owen. He was also 33 at the time of the award, making the result another late-career milestone after his move from Tottenham Hotspur to Bayern Munich in 2023.
The award period ran from 3 August 2025 to 19 July 2026, so voters were assessing Kane’s full club season and England’s 2026 World Cup campaign rather than the 2026 calendar year alone.
Alexia Putellas wins her third Women’s Ballon d’Or
Alexia Putellas won the 2026 Women’s Ballon d’Or for the third time in her career after previous victories in 2021 and 2022. Putellas finished ahead of Ewa Pajor and Khadija Shaw after a season in which she was named Women’s Champions League Player of the Season and helped Barcelona win the competition.
UEFA recorded seven goals and seven assists for Putellas during Barcelona’s 2025/26 Women’s Champions League campaign. She joined London City Lionesses ahead of the 2026/27 season, but the Ballon d’Or recognised performances from the previous season.
| Rank | Player | Club | Country |
| 1 | Alexia Putellas | Barcelona / London City Lionesses | Spain |
| 2 | Ewa Pajor | Barcelona | Poland |
| 3 | Khadija Shaw | Manchester City | Jamaica |

| 6 | Caroline Graham Hansen | Barcelona | Norway |
| 7 | Pernille Harder | Bayern Munich | Denmark |
| 8 | Claudia Pina | Barcelona | Spain |
| 9 | Alessia Russo | Arsenal | England |
| 10 | Temwa Chawinga | Kansas City Current | Malawi |

African players in the 2026 Ballon d’Or rankings
The final rankings also included four African players across the men’s and women’s awards. Morocco’s Achraf Hakimi finished 13th in the men’s ranking, while Senegal’s Sadio Mane shared 29th place. In the women’s ranking, Malawi’s Temwa Chawinga finished 10th and Zambia’s Barbra Banda placed 18th.
Chawinga’s 10th-place finish was the highest by an African player across the two main 2026 Ballon d’Or rankings. Hakimi was the highest-ranked African player in the men’s list at 13th.
How Ballon d’Or voting worked in 2026
France Football’s 2026 rules ranked three criteria in order: individual performance and decisive impact; collective performance and trophies; then class and fair play. The men’s award used one specialised journalist from each of the top 100 nations in the FIFA rankings, while the women’s award used the top 50 nations.
Each juror ranked 10 players from the 30-player shortlist. The selections were worth 15, 12, 10, 8, 7, 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1 point respectively, and the player with the highest total won. First-place votes were the first tie-breaker if two players finished level on points.
Why the 2026 Ballon d’Or was different
The 2026 ceremony was the 70th edition of the Ballon d’Or and was staged at the London Palladium. The London venue marked the first Ballon d’Or ceremony in the city and paid tribute to Sir Stanley Matthews, the inaugural men’s winner in 1956.
Kane’s victory ended England’s 25-year wait for a men’s winner. Putellas, meanwhile, moved to three Women’s Ballon d’Or titles, matching Aitana Bonmati’s total after Bonmati won in 2023, 2024 and 2025.
