King Charles opens the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow

    • King Charles III officially opened the 23rd Commonwealth Games at the OVO Hydro, Glasgow on Thursday, 23 July 2026.

    • Around 3,000 athletes from 74 nations compete for 215 gold medals across 10 sports and six para-sports.

    • The Games run for 10 days, concluding on Sunday, 2 August 2026.

King Charles III officially opened the 23rd Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on Thursday, 23 July 2026, kicking off 10 days of competition in a streamlined edition designed to keep costs under control. Accompanied by Queen Camilla, the King emerged from a TARDIS — inspired by the British science fiction series Doctor Who — setting a light-hearted tone for the ceremony before taking his seat inside the 14,000-capacity OVO Hydro arena in the heart of Glasgow city centre.

Around 3,000 athletes from 74 nations and territories will battle for 215 gold medals across 10 sports and six para-sports. Glasgow last hosted the Games 12 years ago and marks the first-ever indoor opening ceremony in Commonwealth Games history.

    King Charles’s address

“As we gather, we celebrate the dedication and talent of every athlete and team. Your perseverance inspires us, and we eagerly anticipate your achievements in the coming days.”

    — King Charles III, opening ceremony address

“As we share our love of sport, and our planet, let us build a harmonious and lasting future for our families and one another. It is now my great pleasure to declare the twenty-third Commonwealth Games open.”

    — King Charles III

    Games at a glance

    Host city: Glasgow, Scotland

    Dates: 23 July – 2 August 2026

    Nations/territories: 74

    Athletes: approximately 3,000

    Sports: 10 sports + 6 para-sports

The 2026 edition represents a significant overhaul of the Games following a near-collapse three years ago. The streamlined format and reduced budget reflect a deliberate effort to make the competition financially sustainable for future host cities.

    African athletics in the spotlight

Timothy Cheruiyot targets gold in the newly introduced Mile event, while Lilian Odira (800m world champion) and Faith Cherotich (steeplechase) lead a strong middle-distance contingent.
