Arsenal make perfect title defence start with 3-0 demolition of Coventry

Premier League champions Arsenal made a perfect start to their title defence with a convincing 3-0 victory over newly promoted Coventry City in the opening game of the 2026/27 season at the Emirates Stadium on Friday night.

Kai Havertz opened the scoring in the first half before Bukayo Saka doubled Arsenal’s advantage, while captain Martin Ødegaard added a third after the break to complete a dominant display.

Just 89 days after ending last season with a 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace to secure the league title, Arsenal showed little sign of complacency as they overwhelmed Coventry and immediately laid down an early marker.

The victory also extended the momentum from last weekend’s Community Shield triumph over Manchester City, with Arsenal looking increasingly equipped to defend their crown.

    Arsenal strengthened for title defence

Arsenal’s impressive start will provide further encouragement to their rivals, with the champions continuing to strengthen their squad during the summer transfer window.

New signing Ezri Konsa received a warm reception from supporters after being presented to the Emirates crowd before kick-off.

The England defender completed his £51 million ($69 million) move from Aston Villa earlier on Friday and could make his Arsenal debut when the Gunners travel to Villa Park on August 31.

Greek winger Christos Tzolis also impressed on his first Premier League start following his close-season move from Club Brugge, offering another attacking option for Arteta.

Arsenal were also able to cope with the absence of Bruno Guimaraes, who remains sidelined after suffering an injury during last weekend’s Community Shield victory over Manchester City.

The only frustration for Arteta is the wait for Arsenal’s next Premier League fixture, with the champions not returning to action for another 10 days when they visit Aston Villa.

For now, however, Arsenal have delivered the perfect opening statement in their bid to retain the Premier League title.
