Five Killed By Pirates Aboard Hijacked Tanker, Officials Say

Somali pirates killed five crew members aboard the hijacked oil tanker MT Honour 25 before Puntland security forces stormed the vessel and freed it Tuesday, in what appear to be the first fatalities at the hands of Somali pirates in more than a decade.

The Palau-flagged tanker, carrying roughly 18,500 barrels of petroleum products, had been held by pirates since April 21, when it was seized off Somalia’s coast while sailing toward Mogadishu. Puntland’s Information Ministry said in a statement that a rescue mission successfully freed the vessel and its remaining crew, with the Puntland Maritime Police Force capturing multiple suspected pirates during the operation, though several members of the hijacking group fled and remain at large.

ATN, New York has gathered that the killings occurred just before security forces moved in. “Before the operation began, the pirates on board the ship killed five of the crew,” Puntland’s Information Ministry said in its statement. “Among those killed were three from Pakistan, one from Myanmar and one from India.” Four additional crew members were wounded in the same episode, three of them Pakistani nationals and one Indian, the ministry said. The tanker had carried 17 crew members in total at the time it was seized.

The Puntland Maritime Police Force said in a follow-up statement that the vessel was “safe” and back under government control, with efforts continuing to track down pirates who escaped during the rescue operation. Families of the Pakistani crew members had staged protests in Karachi earlier this year, holding placards and calling on Pakistan’s government to press for the safe return of their relatives during the more than five months the tanker remained in pirate hands.

Tuesday’s operation was not Puntland’s only tanker rescue in recent days. It followed a similar mission the previous week in which maritime police freed the Sibu 1, a US-sanctioned tanker that Somali pirates had hijacked in August. That earlier success, however, came with a significant complication: 28 of the 41 pirates arrested during the Sibu 1 operation later escaped while being transferred to jail, and several Puntland security officials have accused local police of complicity in the escape — an allegation that has not been independently resolved and that has raised questions about the reliability of the same security apparatus now credited with Tuesday’s rescue.

The current wave of hijackings forms part of a broader resurgence in Somali piracy that experts have linked in part to the effects of the ongoing US-Israel war against Iran, including elevated global oil prices that have made petroleum-carrying tankers more attractive targets for pirate groups operating off the Somali coast. At least 15 pirate attacks have been reported in Somali waters since April, according to figures cited by officials tracking the resurgence — a sharp escalation from the relatively subdued piracy activity the region had experienced in the years since the previous major wave subsided.

That earlier wave, which ran from roughly 2008 to 2014, disrupted one of the world’s busiest shipping corridors, cost the global economy billions of dollars in rerouted shipping and security costs, and generated hundreds of millions of dollars in ransom payments to pirate networks before a combination of international naval patrols, armed vessel guards and improved coordination among shipping companies brought the crisis under control. Tuesday’s fatalities, the first pirate-caused deaths in the current resurgence, mark a grim escalation that could complicate the relatively restrained pattern that had characterized hijackings since piracy off Somalia’s coast began picking up again this year.

Puntland’s semi-autonomous government has positioned itself as the primary security actor responding to the renewed piracy threat, though the escaped-pirate episode from last week’s Sibu 1 operation illustrates the operational and integrity challenges the region’s maritime police force continues to face even as it notches successive rescue operations. No timeline has been given for locating the pirates who fled Tuesday’s raid, and officials have not said whether any additional hijacked vessels remain in pirate custody off the Somali coast.

The reappearance of lethal violence in the current piracy wave carries implications for the shipping industry beyond the immediate loss of life. Insurance premiums for vessels transiting Somali waters, along with the wider Gulf of Aden corridor, had already risen this year as hijackings resumed after a period of relative calm, and maritime security analysts have said confirmed fatalities tend to accelerate further premium increases and prompt shipping companies to reconsider routing decisions or invest in additional armed security details aboard vulnerable tankers. Whether Tuesday’s deaths mark an isolated escalation or the start of a more violent pattern in the current resurgence remains, for now, an open question shipping firms operating in the region are watching closely.
