IPL 2026: Mumbai Indians’ head coach provides update on Rohit Sharma’s injury

Mumbai Indians (MI) have found themselves navigating a tricky phase in the Indian Premier League 2026 season, and the situation has only been complicated by concerns around Rohit Sharma’s fitness. As one of the team’s most dependable performers at the top, Rohit’s absence has naturally raised questions. However, head coach Mahela Jayawardene has offered a measured update – one that balances relief with realism.

    Update on Rohit Sharma’s injury

There was an audible sense of relief when Jayawardene addressed Rohit’s hamstring issue after the defeat against Punjab Kings (PBKS) on Thursday, April 16. Injuries, especially to senior players, can quickly derail a team’s momentum, but the coach made it clear that the situation is under control. According to him, there is “nothing serious” about the injury, which Rohit picked up earlier against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).

The opener had to walk off mid-innings in that game, which immediately sparked concern among fans and team management alike. But since then, his recovery seems to be progressing steadily. Jayawardene shared that Rohit has already resumed light training, a sign that things are moving in the right direction. Still, the team is choosing patience over urgency.

As he explained, “Rohit started running yesterday. He knows his body better than anybody else, so it’s nothing serious, but at the same time, we don’t want to push, and it’s still early season, so the medical staff will take that call on him.”

That statement reflects a broader strategy – one that prioritizes long-term fitness over short-term gains. With a long tournament ahead, rushing a key player back could create bigger problems later. Instead, MI seem intent on ensuring that when Rohit returns, he does so fully fit and ready to contribute without limitations.

Team challenges go beyond one player

While Rohit’s injury has grabbed attention, it’s only one piece of a larger puzzle for Mumbai Indians. The team’s struggles this season have been collective rather than individual. Sitting near the bottom of the table with multiple losses, MI are clearly searching for rhythm and consistency.

Jayawardene was quick to emphasize that responsibility doesn’t fall on one player or one department. Instead, he made it clear that everyone – from players to support staff – needs to step up. In his words, “It’s on every one of us when we are not doing well. It’s not an individual. It’s pretty much on me, everyone who is involved in the management and all that to see how can we be better.”

The absence of Rohit in the recent match forced a reshuffle at the top, with Quinton de Kock stepping in and delivering an outstanding unbeaten century. While that performance was a bright spot, it also highlighted how much the team has had to adapt in a short span of time.

Injuries and availability issues have played their part in disrupting combinations. The likes of Mitchell Santner being unavailable due to illness have only added to the instability. As a result, the team has struggled to build momentum, particularly in the bowling department, where maintaining pressure has been a concern.

Despite these setbacks, there remains a sense of cautious optimism. Jayawardene hinted that Rohit’s return could come “sooner rather than later,” which would be a significant boost for the side. With important fixtures ahead, including a clash against Gujarat Titans (GT), MI will be hoping to turn things around quickly.
