Foden and Palmer set to miss out on England World Cup squad | Shoot

All eyes will be on England manager Thomas Tuchel on Friday morning as he names his squad for the World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico this summer.

The ex-Chelsea boss will name a 26-man final squad for the tournament at 11am on Friday, having previously submitted an unreleased 55-player list to FIFA.

Ahead of the official announcement, it has been reported that two huge stars are set to miss out on a place in the Three Lions’ squad.

According to The Athletic, both Cole Palmer and Phil Foden are set to miss out on places in the squad when it is announced on Friday.

The two attacking midfielders have both endured difficult seasons, for Chelsea and Manchester City respectively, and the report claims that the duo will not be part of Tuchel’s squad.

Palmer scored England’s goal in the final of the 2024 European Championships, as the Three Lions lost 2-1 to Spain under then-manager Gareth Southgate.

In total the attacker has made 14 appearances for England at senior level, scoring twice.

Despite registering a combined 74 goals and assists across his first two seasons with Chelsea, Palmer’s form has dipped considerably this term, with the Englishman scoring just ten goals so far.

Foden, meanwhile, was named as the PFA Player of the Year in 2024 after Man City completed a remarkable treble, but has since struggled.

The City academy graduate has played 49 times for the Three Lions, scoring four goals.

Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo is expected to be included, though, while former Brentford striker Ivan Toney – currently plying his trade in Saudi Arabia – is another player set to be selected.

England begin their World Cup campaign against Croatia in Texas on June 17, before further group games against Ghana and Panama.
