World Cup 2026 Round of 16.The 2026 FIFA World Cup has been nothing short of spectacular. With the expanded 48-team format bringing an inaugural Round of 32, the last 16 is now set to be one of the strongest knockout rounds in recent history. Heavyweights Germany and the Netherlands were the biggest casualties of the first knockout round — eliminated by Paraguay on penalties and Morocco on penalties respectively.

The eight confirmed Round of 16 fixtures offer a range of betting opportunities. Here we break down the form, the key storylines and the most defensible betting angles for each match.

Confirmed Round of 16 fixtures

Betting angle 1: Home/Draw/Away (1X2)

France are the clearest outright pick in this round. Deschamps’ side have won all five of their World Cup matches, scoring 13 goals and conceding just two. Mbappé leads the golden boot race with six goals — level with Messi. Paraguay’s heroic run to this stage is built on defensive organisation and penalty shootout nerve, but France’s attacking depth and quality should ultimately prove decisive.

Betting angle 2: Over 1.5 goals

Only one Round of 32 match produced fewer than two goals (Canada 1-0 South Africa). Every other fixture delivered over 1.5 goals. This trend is likely to continue in the Round of 16 given the attacking quality remaining in the competition. Strong candidates for this market:

• Brazil vs Norway: Norway have scored 13 and conceded 8 in four matches. Brazil scored 7 in the group stage. Both sides have the attacking quality to find the net.
• Portugal vs Spain: Both teams average two goals per game at this World Cup. Each has been clinical in attack; neither is averse to conceding.
• Mexico vs England: Mexico have scored 8 in four games and kept a perfect defensive record; England have scored freely but conceded 3. Kane and Mbappé-levels of quality from both leadings strikers.
• USA vs Belgium: The Americans have scored in every match; Belgium have 8 goals and are in form after the 3-0 win over Senegal.

Betting angle 3: Both teams to score (BTTS)

Norway have scored prolifically but also shipped eight goals in the tournament. Against Brazil’s attack, the probability of both teams finding the net is high. Haaland, Ødegaard, Sørloth vs Vinícius, Cunha and potentially Neymar — the most exciting attacking contest in the Round of 16.

Portugal vs Spain is another compelling BTTS candidate. Both sides average two goals per game and neither has kept a clean sheet against quality opposition throughout this edition. Ronaldo, Fernándes and Leao face Yamal, Oyarzabal and Olmo — a match that should produce goals at both ends.

Mexico vs England: Mexico’s clean-sheet record in the group stage is remarkable but England’s attacking quality through Kane, Bellingham and Saka makes it hard to back a Mexico clean sheet in the knockout stage. Both teams have the personnel to score.
