And so, another working week will soon draw to a close. Not a moment too soon, yes? This is, you may recall, our treasured signal to daydream about weekend plans. Our agenda, so far, is very low-key. We hope to catch up on our reading, promenade with the official mascots, and take a few naps. We may also manicure the Pharmalot grounds. And of course, we hope to hold still another listening party, where the rotation will likely include this, this, this, this and this. And what about you? The choices are endless this time of year. In particular, the…
Yves here. This post says quite a lot about the behavior of many US employers. They have become so used to undocumented migrant workers (illegally low pay, dangerous workplaces, other abusive practices) that they are unwilling to change the job scope so as to attract US workers. I reject the gloss that migrant labor does not compete with US work. Farmers in Maine perform the knee and back-stressing task of harvesting blueberries. When I was a child, a popular summer job was (actually pretty taxing) strawberry picking. Our yardman in Alabama (white, BTW) said in his childhood he and members…
In May 2026, the U.S. Department of Energy selected USA Rare Earth for a $50.5 million separation project in Oklahoma. This single movement is modest, but its significance lies in how it fits into a broader pattern of U.S. support for the rare-earth industry. The United States is trying to build a system that can make non-Chinese suppliers commercially viable. That shift is necessary, but it also raises an important question for the U.S. rare earth strategy: can Washington sustain durable support for the industry? China’s dominance in the rare earth supply chain makes its export controls unusually powerful. In…

By Chris Snellgrove | Published 18 seconds ago Disney just dropped an unexpected summer treat on fans: a trailer for the second season of X-Men ‘97. Frankly, it looks absolutely awesome, with plenty of killer action sequences and hints of fan-favorite comic storylines. The first season of the show was the best Marvel project in years, and this trailer establishes that this was no fluke. X-Men ‘97 Season 2 looks like it will deliver even more of what audiences have been craving, and Disney revealed that Seasons 3 and 4 are already in production and that we’ll be getting a…

Alaska would more than triple the funding it devotes to school construction and maintenance projects next year under a budget approved this month by the state Legislature. The funding, which awaits Alaska Gov. Mike Dunleavy’s signature, follows reporting by KYUK, ProPublica and NPR last year that documented a severe health and safety crisis inside the buildings used daily for public education. The bill would allocate more than $148 million toward construction and maintenance in the 2027 fiscal year, up from $40 million in fiscal 2026, which ends June 30. The new budget line is an effort to help with millions…

An uncrewed Blue Origin New Glenn rocket exploded on a Florida launchpad during a test on Thursday, in a major setback for Jeff Bezos’ space venture as it seeks to narrow the gap with Elon Musk’s IPO-bound SpaceX. Video posted by NASASpaceflight, which livestreams launches from Florida, showed the towering New Glenn rocket igniting on the pad at about 2100 ET (0100 GMT on Friday) before erupting into a massive fireball that billowed skyward, sending a towering plume of flames and smoke into the air. Blue Origin was preparing the rocket for its fourth launch, which was due to deliver…
