BusinessDay, West Africa’s leading provider of business intelligence and market-moving news, has appointed Oghenevwoke Ighure as its new managing director, ushering in a new era for the media organisation as it accelerates its digital transformation and commercial growth.
Coinciding with the newspaper’s 25th anniversary, the appointment marks a homecoming for Ighure. He returns to BusinessDay following an expansive international career spanning North America, Europe, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and Sub-Saharan Africa.
Frank Aigbogun, BusinessDay’s publisher and co-founder, framed the appointment as the beginning of a carefully planned leadership transition.
“We got our man. Vwoke’s vast global experience and deep knowledge of the local market both present him as a round peg in a round hole. I have over the past 25 years held the reins. Now is the right time to begin to groom a younger generation of leaders for our company,” Aigbogun said.
Ighure brings more than 20 years of experience in business strategy, digital transformation, international media and commercial development across the media, technology, energy, financial services and consulting sectors.
Most recently, he served as Senior Territory Manager at PressReader, where he led the company’s public library and academic business across the United States and Canada, negotiating multi-year licensing agreements and building institutional partnerships.
Earlier, he managed commercial expansion across the United Kingdom, Ireland, Sub-Saharan Africa, Israel, and parts of the Middle East, helping to grow market share across corporate, government, academic, hospitality, and public library segments.
During his time there, he worked with leading global publishers — including Condé Nast, Axel Springer and Dow Jones — supporting the distribution of titles such as The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times and The Economist, among more than 7,500 other publications.
Before joining PressReader, Ighure served as BusinessDay’s executive director for Strategy and Digital Transformation, where he led the company’s first technology acquisition, TheRealGist. He also launched BusinessDay’s mobile newspaper service in partnership with MTN Nigeria and Huawei, which grew to more than 1.4 million subscribers. He also played a key role in the company’s expansion into Ghana.
His leadership has earned international recognition, including selection in 2014 for the Young African Leaders Fellowship, now known as the Mandela Washington Fellowship. He holds an MBA from the University of Kent, United Kingdom, and has completed executive programmes at the University of Texas at Austin and Howard University.
Richard Ikiebe, BusinessDay board chairman, said Ighure’s return comes at a defining moment for the media industry.
“We are delighted to welcome Vwoke back to BusinessDay as our managing director and chief executive officer. His return could not have come at a more important time. Under Vwoke’s leadership, I am confident BusinessDay will strengthen its journalism, deepen its digital transformation and expand its impact across Nigeria and the African continent,” Ikiebe said.
Speaking on his appointment, Ighure said he would build on BusinessDay’s legacy while preparing the organisation for the future.
“BusinessDay has spent decades building trust as Nigeria’s authority on business and economic news. I’m honoured to lead this next chapter, one where we deepen that trust while embracing the tools and thinking that will define the media’s future. My focus is simple: serve our readers better, grow with purpose, and build something that lasts beyond any one of us,” he said.
