Possible punishments Man City could face revealed

Here are the possible punishments Man City could face after being found guilty of 114 out of 115 charges against them in the Premier League.

Manchester City could face a range of major sanctions, including a fine, points deduction or even expulsion from the Premier League as their long-running financial rules case enters a crucial stage.

Reports on Friday, September 25, indicated that an independent tribunal has reached decisions in the case involving the Premier League’s charges against City, with most of the alleged breaches reportedly found proven.

However, the process is not yet fully concluded, and no final punishment has been publicly confirmed.

City have consistently denied wrongdoing throughout the proceedings, while the Premier League has declined to comment on reports surrounding the tribunal’s findings.

What punishments could Manchester City face?

Under Premier League rules, an independent commission has wide-ranging powers when deciding how to sanction a club.

A financial penalty is one possible outcome. The commission could impose a fine on City, although the size of any financial punishment would depend on its findings.

A points deduction is another possibility and could have a major impact on City’s Premier League campaign. Unlike a fixed punishment, there is no predetermined number of points that must be deducted for the alleged breaches.

The most severe possibility is expulsion from the Premier League. The commission has the power to recommend to the Premier League board that a club be expelled, although such an outcome would represent an extreme sanction.

Other possible measures under the league’s rules include suspending a club from playing league matches, ordering compensation, cancelling or refusing player registrations, imposing conditional punishments and ordering the payment of legal costs.

The commission can also make other orders it considers appropriate.

    Could Manchester City be relegated?

Expulsion from the Premier League and relegation are not necessarily the same process.

The commission can recommend that City be expelled from the competition. What would happen to the club after an expulsion, including which division it would enter, would depend on subsequent decisions involving the relevant football authorities.

Therefore, reports that City could automatically be relegated to a particular division should be treated cautiously until an official sanction is announced.

Could Manchester City be stripped of Premier League titles?

There has also been considerable speculation over whether City could lose titles won during the period covered by the case.

However, stripping historical titles is not among the specific sanctions commonly listed in the Premier League rules governing the commission.

Any decision affecting previous titles would therefore require further legal and regulatory consideration rather than being an automatic consequence of the reported findings.

Why are Manchester City facing charges?

The Premier League originally referred Manchester City to an independent commission in February 2023 over alleged breaches of its financial regulations.

The allegations include claims that City failed to provide accurate financial information over several seasons, failed to provide complete details concerning player and manager remuneration, failed to comply with UEFA financial regulations and failed to cooperate fully with the Premier League’s investigation.

City have denied the allegations throughout the case.

The independent hearing began in September 2024 and concluded in December of that year, but the complexity and volume of evidence meant the process continued for considerably longer than initially anticipated.

With reports now suggesting that the tribunal has reached decisions on the charges, attention turns to the next stages of the process and, crucially, what sanctions could eventually be imposed.

For now, fines, a points deduction and even expulsion remain among the possible punishments, but no final sanction should be regarded as confirmed until the disciplinary and appeal processes are completed.
