Arsenal Open Their Title Defence with Three Points

Arsenal started the campaign with a 3-0 victory over Coventry City at the Emirates Stadium.

The defending champions collected three points and a clean sheet against a Coventry side returning to the Premier League after a long absence from the top flight.

The result gave Arsenal the start they wanted after entering the season as champions. Our Arsenal vs Coventry coverage has more from the opening fixture, including the confirmed teams and match developments.

Arsenal’s win was convincing, but Matchweek 1 is only the starting point. Their ability to maintain that level as the schedule develops will determine how strongly their title defence takes shape.

Hull City Mark Their Premier League Return with a Major Win

Hull City produced one of the biggest results of Premier League Matchweek 1 by beating Manchester United 2-0.

Returning to the Premier League after nine years away, Hull immediately collected three points against a Manchester United side expected to compete towards the top end of the table.

The result gave Hull an ideal return to the division and left Manchester United looking for a response in their next fixture.

See our Hull City vs Manchester United coverage for more from the opening-day meeting.

    Promoted Clubs Collect Six Points

Hull were not the only promoted club to make an impact.

Ipswich Town also opened with a victory, beating Sunderland 2-1. Coventry City were the only one of the three promoted sides to lose, having started their campaign away against Arsenal.

That means the three promoted clubs collected six points between them from Matchweek 1.

It is far too early to draw conclusions about the relegation battle, but Hull and Ipswich have already put points on the board rather than spending the opening weeks waiting for their first Premier League win.

Brighton Record the Biggest Win of Matchweek 1

Brighton & Hove Albion produced the largest winning margin of the round with a 4-0 victory against Aston Villa.

The result gave Brighton three points, four goals and a clean sheet from their opening fixture.

Goal difference carries limited significance after one game, but a four-goal victory provides Brighton with an excellent starting position as the first league table begins to form.

    Brentford Put Three Past Tottenham

Brentford were another side to make a strong opening statement, beating Tottenham Hotspur 3-0.

The result placed Brentford among the seven home sides that won during Matchweek 1 and gave them both maximum points and a clean sheet.

For Tottenham, the three-goal defeat creates an immediate need for improvement when they return for their second league fixture.

Manchester City Find a Way Past Bournemouth

Manchester City opened their campaign with a 2-1 victory over Bournemouth at the Etihad Stadium.

The scoreline was tighter than several of the weekend’s other home victories, but City secured all three points as they began another Premier League campaign among the teams expected to challenge towards the top.

The fixture was also an early test for a City side entering a new phase. Read our full Manchester City vs Bournemouth Premier League coverage for the wider context around both teams.

Newcastle and Liverpool Produce Matchweek 1’s Only Draw

Newcastle United and Liverpool shared the points in a 2-2 draw at St James’ Park.

It was the only draw across the ten fixtures, leaving both clubs on one point after their opening match.

With four goals and neither side able to secure the winner, the game stood apart from a Matchweek dominated by home victories.

Our Newcastle United vs Liverpool coverage provides more background on the fixture and the two clubs entering the new Premier League season.

Chelsea Close Matchweek 1 with a Five-Goal Win

Chelsea completed the opening round with a 3-2 victory over Fulham at Craven Cottage.

João Pedro, Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer scored for Chelsea, while Josh King and Gonzalo García found the net for Fulham as the West London meeting produced five goals.

Chelsea’s victory meant they joined Arsenal, Hull City, Everton, Ipswich Town, Leeds United, Brentford, Brighton and Manchester City in starting the season with three points.

Follow the Fulham vs Chelsea match coverage for more from the final fixture of Matchweek 1.

What the Matchweek 1 Results Tell Us

The first round has given us several useful starting points.

Seven of the ten matches were won by the home team, showing how strongly home sides performed across the opening weekend.

Hull City provided arguably the biggest surprise by beating Manchester United on their return to the division, while Ipswich ensured two of the three promoted clubs began with victories.

Brighton’s 4-0 win over Aston Villa was the biggest result by margin. Arsenal started their title defence with three goals and a clean sheet, Manchester City and Chelsea both collected maximum points, and Newcastle against Liverpool produced the only draw.

There is not enough football played yet to identify lasting trends. What Matchweek 1 does provide is the first competitive reference point. As more fixtures are completed, the league table, scoring patterns, defensive records and team form will provide a clearer picture of the 2026/27 season.
