Bovi brings ‘Guilty as Charged’ to Lagos, promises fresh comedy experience

Bovi Ugboma, A-list Nigerian comedian, actor and writer is set to return to the Lagos stage with his latest stand-up comedy show, promising audiences a fresh comedy and entertainment experience.

The show, titled, ‘Bovi: Guilty as Charged,’ is scheduled to hold at the Convention Centre, Eko Hotel & Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos, on October 11, 2026.

Bovi, who spoke during a media briefing ahead of the show, said doors will be open at 6 p.m., with the show starting at 7 p.m till 10:00pm, noting that the production will draw from events, experiences and topical issues from the past year, allowing audiences to connect with situations they have encountered in their everyday lives.

He explained that the title follows a tradition in his shows, where one central theme runs through the material, much like the title track of an album.

According to him, the material will cover a wide range of issues, while maintaining the artistic approach that has defined his comedy over the years.

“I’m going to talk about everything you can think of that has happened in the last one year,” Bovi said.

He stated that the show will feature several young comedians as opening acts, and disclosed that an unnamed A-list comedian will make a guest appearance.

He explained that his preference has generally been to keep his headline shows centred on his own performance, while using the platform to provide opportunities for emerging comedians.

“I’m featuring many young comics, young in career, age, or both as opening acts to prep the audience before I come in,” Bovi said.

The comedian noted that he has become more cautious when dealing with sensitive subjects, particularly situations involving individuals whose stories are still developing, stressing that comedians must be careful not to turn ongoing situations into material that could be misunderstood or perceived as personal attacks.

However, Bovi said this would not prevent him from addressing political or controversial issues when he considers them appropriate for comedy.

“I make comedy with anything I can,” he said, adding that the responsibility is to maintain a balance between making jokes and insulting people.

Bovi also highlighted the production demands involved in staging major comedy shows in Nigeria, noting that comedians often have to take on multiple responsibilities beyond performing.

He said the shortage of large-capacity venues also makes it difficult for ticket sales alone to sustain major comedy productions, making corporate sponsorship important to the success of such events.

Ann Obaseki, representing Talent Ville Production, said the comedy show is also introducing a more structured seating experience, allowing attendees to select their seats ahead of the show.

“There will be no open seating. Every ticket holder will have an allocated seat, selected online at the point of booking, replacing the traditional table arrangement common at comedy shows in Nigeria,”she said, noting that the change is the result of several years of work to improve the audience experience, so guests know exactly where they will sit before they arrive.
