Curro Hazeldean’s Tiisetso Malungane Sets African U16 Mile Record at Curro Street Mile 2026

The Curro Street Mile powered by ASICS brought Youth Day athletics to life with more than 900 athletes and 45 of South Africa’s leading elite middle-distance runners, delivering one of the standout performances in South African school athletics this year.

The popular road running event showcased the depth of school sports talent in South Africa, providing young athletes with a unique opportunity to compete alongside national champions and elite middle-distance runners. From seven-year-olds experiencing their first race to some of the country’s top performers, the Curro Street Mile continues to bridge the gap between grassroots athletics and elite competition.

Tiisetso Malungane Breaks African U16 Mile Record

The defining performance of the 2026 Curro Street Mile came from Tiisetso Malungane of Curro Hazeldean, who recorded the fastest mile ever run by a 16-year-old on African soil, crossing the finish line in 4:03.85.

The South African school athletics star has enjoyed a remarkable season, breaking national records at U16 and U17 level in the 800m, 1500m and 3000m. His latest achievement further cements his status as one of the country’s most exciting young middle-distance runners.

Competing against a strong field of senior elite athletes, Malungane demonstrated why he is regarded as one of the brightest prospects in South African athletics. His performance highlights the growing strength of school sports development pathways and the opportunities created through events such as the Curro Street Mile.

    Elite Athletes Raise the Standard

The women’s elite race featured national 1500m champion Karabo More, national record-holder Glenrose Xaba and Boxer Athletics Club athlete Carina Swiegers. Their participation provided inspiration for hundreds of young female athletes competing on Youth Day.

The men’s elite field was equally competitive, with Johannes Morepe, Keanu Domingo and Musawenkosi Mnisi producing a high-quality race that showcased the strength of South African middle-distance running.

    A Platform for Future Champions

The Curro Street Mile powered by ASICS continues to play an important role in South African athletics by creating opportunities for school athletes to compete in a professional environment. The event attracted participants from Hammanskraal, Mabopane, Soshanguve, Atteridgeville, Olivenhoutbosch and Mamelodi, reinforcing its commitment to developing athletics talent across South Africa.

More than just a race, the event celebrates youth development, school sports excellence and the future of South African athletics. Tiisetso Malungane’s African U16 mile record serves as a powerful reminder of the exceptional talent emerging from South African schools and the opportunities available when young athletes are given a platform to excel
