Here’s why Nigerians should consider glasses for sunlight, screen time

As Nigerians spend more hours in front of laptops and smartphones while also facing intense sunlight throughout the year, there is a need for protective eyewear designed for different environments.

Although no pair of glasses can completely eliminate eye strain or prevent all eye diseases, the right lenses can reduce exposure to harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays outdoors and improve visual comfort during prolonged computer use.

For most people, UV protection is essential, while blue-light filtering is optional. If your primary concern is eye health, prioritise sunglasses or clear lenses that block 100 percent of UVA and UVB rays.

If you spend eight or more hours a day on a laptop, consider lenses with anti-reflective coatings and ensure your workspace follows good ergonomic practices.

Regular eye examinations remain the most effective way to protect long-term vision, especially for people experiencing persistent eye strain, blurred vision or headaches.

    Why does UV protection matters

Nigeria experiences high levels of ultraviolet radiation because of its tropical climate. Long-term exposure to UV rays has been linked to cataracts, photokeratitis (sunburn of the eye), pterygium, and may contribute to age-related macular degeneration.

Eye doctors recommend sunglasses that block 99 percent to 100 percent of both UVA and UVB rays.

Lens colour is less important than certified UV protection which means dark lenses without UV protection can actually be worse because they cause the pupils to dilate and allow more harmful rays into the eyes.

People who spend significant time outdoors including drivers, commuters, construction workers and street traders are among those who stand to benefit most from UV-protective eyewear.

    Do blue-light glasses really work?

With remote work, online learning and digital entertainment becoming part of daily life, blue-light-blocking glasses have become popular. However, the evidence is mixed.

The American Academy of Ophthalmology said there is no strong scientific evidence that blue light from computer screens causes eye damage or that blue-light-blocking glasses are necessary for most people.

Instead, experts recommend following the 20-20-20 rule (every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds), reduce screen brightness, use anti-reflective lenses to reduce glare, maintain proper lighting while working and get regular eye examinations.

People who experience headaches, glare or eye fatigue may still find anti-reflective coatings or computer glasses helpful, particularly if prescribed by an optometrist.

What to look out for when buying glasses

Whether buying prescription or non-prescription glasses, experts recommend looking for 100 percent UVA and UVB protection for outdoor sunglasses.

You can also look out for anti-reflective coating for laptop use, scratch-resistant coating for durability, lightweight frames for long hours of wear.

Prescription lenses if recommended by an eye care professional.

For people who frequently move between indoor computer work and outdoor activities, photochromic (transition) lenses can automatically darken in sunlight while remaining clear indoors.

    Recommended global brands

    Ray-Ban
This is one of the best-known eyewear brands and suitable for everyday outdoor use.

Ray-Ban offers certified UV400 sunglasses in a wide range of styles.

    Oakley
This is popular among athletes and drivers because it is best for sports , driving and outdoor activities.

Oakley lenses provide excellent UV protection and high optical clarity.

    Transitions

Rather than being a frame brand, Transitions makes photochromic lenses that darken automatically outdoors.

It is best for people who move between offices and outdoor environments.

    ZEISS BlueGuard
ZEISS combines anti-reflective technology with blue-light management while maintaining high optical quality.

It is best used for office professionals and heavy computer users.

    Essilor Eyezen
Eyezen lenses are designed for digital lifestyles by helping to reduce visual fatigue through optimised lens design and glare reduction.

It is best for students and professionals working long hours on computers.

    JINS Screen
This is a more affordable option designed primarily for digital device users. It is best for extended laptop and smartphone use.

Can one pair do both jobs?

Many optical stores can fit prescription or non-prescription lenses with 100 percent UV protection, anti-reflective coating, photochromic technology and scratch -resistant coating.

This allows a single pair of glasses to function as everyday eyewear indoors while automatically darkening outside.
