How Nigeria tracked and nabbed seven suspected ISWAP commanders returning from Hajj at Katsina Airport

Nigeria’s integrated identity and immigration databases have enabled security agencies to track and apprehend seven suspected commanders from Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP). The suspects were intercepted upon returning from the 2026 Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia.

According to federal officials, law enforcement personnel detained the individuals at the Umaru Musa Yar’Adua International Airport in Katsina immediately after their arrival last Thursday. The authorities subsequently transferred the suspects to Abuja for further questioning.

    Government confirms database synchronisation

Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the Minister of Interior, disclosed the operational milestone in Abuja. The announcement followed the executive assent of Bola Tinubu, the President, to the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) Act 2026.

The interior minister confirmed that border security officials handed the seven commanders over to the Department of State Services (DSS) for interrogation. The breakthrough relies directly on the real-time integration of the NIMC database with the Nigeria Immigration Service records and international law enforcement platforms.

    Real-time tracking improves border protection

The automated verification network allows immigration authorities to identify people of security interest via continuous data synchronisation with Interpol. This 24-hour connectivity ensures that flagged individuals face detection before entering the country.

The successful interceptions occur amid heightened public scrutiny regarding how the high-profile suspects initially managed to depart the country for the pilgrimage. The incident also follows recent allegations concerning state-sponsored travel logistics, which the Katsina State Government has denied.

The Federal Government has not disclosed the transport methods the suspects used to reach Saudi Arabia, nor have officials confirmed if broader tracking investigations are currently underway.
