Quick observation: The 2009 and 2017 seasons each produced 3 hat-tricks — the most in any single IPL campaign.

Players With the Most Hat-Tricks in IPL

Three bowlers have taken more than one hat-trick. Here’s what makes each of them special.

    Amit Mishra – 3 Hat-Tricks (Most Ever)

Amit Mishra isn’t just the leader on this list. He’s miles ahead in terms of consistency.

What makes his record stand out is that he took each hat-trick for a different franchise: Delhi Daredevils in 2008, Deccan Chargers in 2011, and Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2013. That’s not luck. That’s a leg-spinner reading T20 batters across an entire decade.

Mishra retired from all forms of cricket in September 2025. He finished his IPL career with 174 wickets in 162 matches, ranking among the top wicket-takers in the league’s history, with the leading wicket-taker every season earning the Purple Cap. and one of the most successful IPL spinners over the years. His 3-hat-trick record looks safe for a long time.

Yuvraj Singh – 2 Hat-Tricks (Both in One Season)

Here’s a record that might never be broken: Yuvraj Singh is the only player to take 2 hat-tricks in the same IPL season.

He pulled off both during IPL 2009 (held in South Africa) for Kings XI Punjab. The first came against RCB in Durban — Robin Uthappa, Jacques Kallis, and Mark Boucher gone in three balls. The second came against Deccan Chargers in Johannesburg — Herschelle Gibbs, Andrew Symonds, and Y. Venugopal Rao back in the hut.

The wildest part? Those six wickets were the only six wickets Yuvraj picked up the entire season. A part-time left-arm spinner walking off with two hat-tricks while never threatening anywhere else with the ball — you can’t make this up.

Yuzvendra Chahal – 2 Hat-Tricks (Across Two Franchises)

Chahal joined the multiple hat-trick club in IPL 2025. His first came in 2022 for Rajasthan Royals against KKR (Shreyas Iyer, Shivam Mavi, Pat Cummins). His second came in 2025 for Punjab Kings against CSK at Chepauk, dismissing Deepak Hooda, Anshul Kamboj, and Noor Ahmad in the 19th over.

He also became the first bowler ever to take a hat-trick against Chennai Super Kings.

    Most Memorable Hat-Tricks in IPL

Numbers tell you what happened. Stories tell you why it mattered, while strike rate remains another key stat that often defines how games turn quickly.

Lakshmipathy Balaji – The First Ever (2008): CSK had to defend 19 off four balls in the final over. Balaji removed Irfan Pathan, Piyush Chawla, and VRV Singh on three straight balls to seal an 18-run win for CSK. The IPL was barely a month old, and it already had a hat-trick to remember.

Rohit Sharma – The Part-Timer Pulls One Out (2009): Yes, Rohit Sharma has a hat-trick. Bowling his off-breaks for Deccan Chargers against the Mumbai Indians (his future franchise), Rohit dismissed Abhishek Nayar, Harbhajan Singh, and JP Duminy. He finished with figures of 4/6, which stands among the most surprising bowling performances in IPL history.

Pravin Tambe – Hat-Trick at 42 (2014): Tambe didn’t even play first-class cricket before the IPL. He debuted at 41 and grabbed a hat-trick at 42 for Rajasthan Royals against KKR, removing Manish Pandey, Yusuf Pathan, and Ryan ten Doeschate. Pure underdog story.

Shreyas Gopal – Stars on a Plate (2019): Playing for Rajasthan Royals against RCB in Bengaluru, Gopal dismissed Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers, and Marcus Stoinis on consecutive deliveries. Probably the most star-studded victim list on this entire chart.

Sam Curran – The Two-Over Hat-Trick (2019): Curran’s hat-trick is the only one in IPL history that was completed across two separate overs. He picked up two wickets at the end of one over and the third on the first ball of his next.

    Interesting Facts About IPL Hat-Tricks

A few nuggets that even big IPL fans miss:

    • Yuvraj Singh’s two hat-tricks in 2009 make him the only player ever to do it in one season. As mentioned, those were also the only six wickets he took that whole IPL.
    • Punjab Kings and Rajasthan Royals lead with 5 hat-tricks each taken by their bowlers — joint-most among all franchises.
    • KKR have conceded the most hat-tricks in IPL history with 4. Both Chahal (2022) and Rashid Khan (2023) picked theirs against KKR in back-to-back seasons.
    • Makhaya Ntini was the first overseas player to take a hat-trick in the IPL (2008, for CSK against KKR).
    • Sourav Ganguly is the only batter to be dismissed in two different IPL hat-tricks (Ntini in 2008 and Ajit Chandila in 2012).
    • Ahmedabad and Bengaluru have hosted 3 hat-tricks each — the joint-highest of any IPL venue.
    • Pace vs spin is almost an even split. Spinners like Mishra, Chahal, Narine, Rashid Khan, and Badree balance out pacers like Balaji, Ntini, Praveen Kumar, Tye, Unadkat, Curran, and Harshal Patel.
