Santos team news and current form
Santos come into the match on their strongest league run of the season. They are unbeaten in seven Brasileirão games and have won five in a row, including a 2-1 away victory over São Paulo.
Neymar is back in the matchday squad after five weeks recovering from a thigh injury. Current reporting says he will start on the bench rather than in the first XI. Luan Peres returns from suspension, while Gabriel Bontempo is available again after international duty.
Arthur is unavailable with a right-thigh injury. Everton Cebolinha and Caballero are also out of the group for this fixture. Cuca therefore has important attacking options back, but the squad is not at full strength.
Flamengo team news and current form
Flamengo lead the Brasileirão with 60 points and arrive at Vila Belmiro protecting a three-point advantage over Palmeiras. Their position gives this away match direct importance in the title race.
Leonardo Jardim has five confirmed absences. Arrascaeta is recovering from wrist surgery, while Ayrton Lucas and Evertton Araújo remain unavailable. Léo Ortiz has been released for personal reasons, and Varela is being rested after returning late from international duty.
Pedro and Samuel Lino are available after Brazil duty, while Anthony Valencia also travelled with the squad. Flamengo therefore retain significant attacking depth despite the absences.
Santos vs Flamengo H2H
Flamengo won the first league meeting of the 2026 season 3-1 at the Maracanã. The previous season also produced contrasting results: Santos won 1-0 at Vila Belmiro in July 2025, while Flamengo won 3-2 at home in November.
Those recent meetings underline the importance of venue in this fixture. Santos have already shown they can make Vila Belmiro difficult for Flamengo, while the league leaders have had the upper hand in the more recent meetings in Rio.
Current standings and match context
Flamengo are first with 60 points and remain in control of the title race entering Round 29. Santos have climbed to eighth on 41 points after their unbeaten run and are now pushing toward the continental qualification positions.
A Flamengo win would protect their advantage at the top. Santos can strengthen their position in the upper half and continue one of the league’s strongest current runs with another home result.
Key players and match factors
Gabigol is one of the main storylines after scoring twice in Santos’ 2-1 win over São Paulo. His movement and finishing will be central against a Flamengo defence missing Léo Ortiz.
Neymar’s return gives Santos another high-level option from the bench, but his minutes are expected to be managed after injury. Gabriel Bontempo also returns and gives Cuca another midfield option.
For Flamengo, the challenge is replacing Arrascaeta’s creativity without losing control of the ball. The leaders still have Pedro, Samuel Lino and other attacking options available, so Santos will need to manage transitions carefully.
