World Cup 2026: Resilient Ghana hold England to frustrating goalless draw

England were left frustrated on Tuesday after Thomas Tuchel’s side were held to a 0-0 draw by Ghana in their second Group L fixture at the FIFA World Cup 2026.

It was a first half defined more by effort than quality, as Ghana absorbed sustained England pressure with discipline and resilience. The Three Lions’ only notable chance saw Declan Rice send a looping header over the crossbar.

England improved marginally after the break, with Nico O’Reilly coming closest to breaking the deadlock when his late header struck the crossbar. Despite their dominance after the 4-2 opening win over Croatia, this performance raised questions about their cutting edge in attack.

Tuchel’s side controlled possession and registered 19 shots to Ghana’s two, but struggled to find a way past stand-in goalkeeper Benjamin Asare in front of 63,983 fans at Gillette Stadium near Boston.

Both teams now sit on four points in Group L, with qualification to the next round all but secured, although final standings remain unresolved heading into the last round of fixtures.

In cool, damp conditions, England produced a subdued display reminiscent of some of their inconsistent performances at Euro 2024. However, they extended their strong World Cup record against African opposition, a streak that was never seriously threatened.

Ghana, ranked 73rd in the world and 69 places below England, delivered a disciplined defensive performance to earn a valuable point.

England will now turn their attention to their final group match against Panama at MetLife Stadium on Saturday, needing only a point to secure progression to the Round of 32. Ghana will face Croatia in their final fixture, with both sides still in a strong position to advance.
